The Maltese government is introducing a legal reform that will ban wage payments in cash, mandating the use of direct debit transfers or, in certain cases, cheques. Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that this measure aims to protect workers’ rights, ensuring they receive their full wages transparently and safeguarding vulnerable employees from exploitation. While this new regulation is designed to uphold dignity and fairness in the workplace, it also aligns with broader efforts to strengthen labour conditions in Malta.
Additionally, the Prime Minister addressed other national issues, including ongoing negotiations at MCAST between the government and the Malta Union of Teachers regarding a new collective agreement, judicial reforms, traffic management, and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine.
